Anti-Poison Dog Units for the Egyptian vulture: signed an agreement between CUFAA and ISPRA as part of the Egyptian vulture LIFE Project

The Egyptian vulture, a small endangered buzzard, is a species very vulnerable to the use of poison. To reduce what represents one of the most serious threats to its conservation, the Carabinieri Command Unit for Forest, Environmental and Agri-Food (CUFAA) and the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) have signed an agreement as part of the Egyptian vulture LIFE Project.

By this agreement, the CUFAA Anti-Poison Dog Units will monitor the distribution area of the species, where the Egyptian vulture LIFE Project is carrying out many actions to help this bird of prey.

Nesting areas will be subject to the UCAs’ greatest attention, where the Egyptian vultures stop during their migration or where, sometimes, young birds of prey stop to winter instead of migrating to Africa.

The UCAs’ activity will also affect the areas where the young Egyptian vultures are released by the CERM Association and the ISPRA and the areas in which food support is provided to the species, both near the nesting areas and along the migration route.

A first operation was carried out at the end of June in Puglia, near the Alta Murgia National Park, by the UCA of the LIFE PLUTO Project that is based in the nearby Pollino National Park. The inspection involved an area of Murge which is also frequented by some of the Egyptian vultures that have been released in Basilicata in recent years thanks to the Egyptian vulture LIFE Project.
